The Adaptation of Mosquito Larvae to Salt Water

چکیده

IT is well known that the larvae of certain mosquitoes can thrive both in fresh water and in water of a high degree of salinity, while the larvae of other mosquitoes are quickly killed by salt water; and that such differences may exist even between local races of the same species (Evans, 1931). It is evident that we have here to deal with a physiological adaptation, and it was the object of the present work to discover what the nature of this adaptation might be. The physiological properties of larvae of the yellow-fever mosquito (Aedes (Stegomyid) argenteus Poir), which were accustomed to salt water, have been compared with those same properties in normal larvae. It so happens that this particular larva is unable to tolerate very salt water; but it is probable that the relatively small degree of resistance which it can acquire is of the same kind as that occurring in more tolerant species, and therefore the mechanism of this resistance may throw light upon the general problem.

The runnelling method of habitat modification: an environment-focused tool for salt marsh mosquito management.

Traditional methods of managing salt marsh mosquitoes focus primarily on maximizing the reduction of mosquito populations, with minimizing environmental impact as a secondary consideration. An environment-oriented approach to salt marsh management for mosquito control, runnelling, is described and compared with other forms of habitat modification such as ditching and Open Marsh Water Management...

Background & Aims of the Study: Malaria is an infectious disease by fever, chills and anemia; and splenomegaly genus Plasmodium parasite is the agent of it. One of the easiest and least expensive methods for preventionof this disease is removing the vector that usually has been done by insecticides and chemical pesticides, but now days due to the harmful effects of toxic chemic...

pH tolerances and regulatory abilities of freshwater and euryhaline Aedine mosquito larvae.

The pH regulatory abilities of two members of the mosquito tribe Aedini, known to have dramatically different saline tolerances, are investigated. The freshwater mosquito Aedes aegypti and the euryhaline Ochlerotatus taeniorhynchus tolerate very similar pH ranges. Both species complete larval development in waters ranging from pH 4 to pH 11, but naïve larvae always die in water of pH 3 or 12. A...

Rainfall is not a direct mortality factor for anopheline larvae.

Sir, The impact of raindrops has major consequences on the soil surface conditions. The effects of rain drop energy on erosion and infiltration have been investigated (Fernandes et al., 1997). Palmer (1965) found that a thin layer of water increases the effects of raindrop impact force on soil properties; this result has been confirmed by numerical simulation (Huang et al., 1983; Chang & Hills,...

Open marsh water management in Massachusetts: adapting the technique to local conditions and its impact on mosquito larvae during the first season.

In recent years, mosquito abatement techniques known variously as quality ditching, source management, or open marsh water management (OMWM), have shown promise of reducing mosquito numbers on salt marshes while preserving habitats and species diversity (Provost, 1977). Pool habitats are created or maintained rather than destroyed, and the levels of insecticide use greatly reduced. Although the...
